How do you explain how artificial intelligence perceives humour?

On the occasion of the new launch of their new blog, Fraunhofer Institute asked for a case study page to showcase the research about Artificial Intelligence learning humour.
Besides the comical aspect, representing the subject for two completely different target groups was quite of a challenge. On one side we had to consider users not related to science, on the other group of experts searching for detailed insights.

As part of the solution, we decided to lead the explanation in a visual way, providing a joke example as the main reference for the scientific study. Each part of the joke was connected to a specific page showcasing how an artificial intelligence could perceive the different characters, actions and emotions involved and the whole complexity of teaching the humour factor.
All the scientific elements, from the initial vectors to the three-dimensional spheres representing characters and places, were accessible to the audience in a linear and complete explanation, or through chapters enabling them to jump in a specific section or topic.

In order to facilitate the conversation around the topic, the explanation is divided into the visual module covering large part of the screen, and the detailed explanation on the side. The whole case study is also explorable in the "expert mode". With the use of a switch, the audience of experts and scientists can focus the view on specific elements of the joke and read a more complex, detailed insight of the different elements and interactions involved.
